OIC: Burmese government refuses to accept Rohingya as citizens

Rohingya News Agency - (IINA) – Atta al-Mannan Bakhit, former Assistant Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said that previous efforts of the Islamic countries were virtually ineffective as they did not achieve their objectives, particularly those related to the recognition of Rohingya minority Muslims as a component of the Burmese people (Myanmar) and obtaining of their full citizenship rights, including the right to work and to vote.

Human rights activist Bakhit told “al-Khabar” in a telephone conversation that “the city of Sittwe (Akyab), which used to be home for Rohingya Muslims for generations, is now deserted as they have been forced out of their homes to remote camps and temporary sites,” according to Arakan news agency.
He said despite the efforts of the Islamic world, especially Turkey, to help the Rohingyas, “no progress was made” in this regard. He noted that the Buddhist government of Myanmar succeeded in imposing its policy against Rohingya Muslim minority after making concessions to the major states.
“The Buddhist government operates within a clear policy, refusing to recognize Rohingya minority as part of the Burmese people, as the Muslim world pressures to address the issue have so far proved futile,” added Bakhit.
