Rohingya News Agency-(ABC):‎ ‎The United Nations refugee agency says it's concerned about the welfare of a group of asylum seekers on a remote island in Indonesia.

About 95 asylum seekers remain on the Indonesian island of Pulau Liran after they failed to reach their desired destination of Australia.

Vivian Tan, regional spokeswoman for UNHCR, says the women and children in the group are staying with local families on the island.

"This is a very remote and hard to reach area and we're worried that it might be very difficult to send aid supplies that the group needs," she said.

The group is reportedly short of food and some are sick.

Ms Tan says there may be young children and pregnant women from the group.

"They may be in urgent need of medical attention which may not be available where they are at the moment," she said.

The 73 Rohingyas and 22 Bangladeshis left the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on June 24 for Australia.

The group strayed into East Timor when their boat broke down due to engine failure and bad weather.

Zaw Win, the representative for the 73 Rohingyas on board, said their attempts at seeking asylum in East Timor were denied and they were forcibly moved to Pulau Liran.

Pulau Liran is a small island, with a population of just 300, off the southwest coast of Wetar Island in Indonesia's Maluku province.

Ms Tan says the UNHCR is calling on the group to be moved quickly.

"UNHCR has been advocating with the Indonesian authorities to urgently move this group of people to a location that's more accessible for aid workers," she said.
