Malaysia detains Burma migrants after killings

Rohingya News Agency- (AP) — Police said Wednesday that they had detained dozens of people from Burma following four killings in Malaysia’s main city that are feared to be linked to sectarian violence in Burma.

The killing of four Burma migrants in separate incidents in Kuala Lumpur this past week has raised concerns that tensions between Burma’s Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya minority are spilling over to another Southeast Asian country where hundreds of thousands of Burma nationals have come to seek work and stability.

An official in Kuala Lumpur’s police headquarters said that “a few dozen” people from Burma have been held for questioning in recent days. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements.

The killings include a man fatally slashed while sleeping in a car wash center and another attacked by people with sharp objects in a marketplace, according to Malaysian media reports.

Malaysia has long attracted asylum seekers from Burma, with the number rising in the past year after several hundred people were killed in Burma in two waves of sectarian violence that targeted mostly members of the Muslim Rohingya community.
