BGP collects tolls from cattle in Maungdaw

Burma Border Guard Police (BGP) are collecting tolls from the cattle, which are being brought to sell in the local markets before Eid-ul-Adha or Qurbani (animal sacrifice festival) day, Mohin from Maungdaw said.

A group of cattle trader brings cows and buffaloes from Ahngumaw area of Rathedaung Township after taking permission from the concerned authorities but the traders have to pay Kyat 2,000 per head in BGP check-posts of on the way to their destination as a tolls. Those cattle will be sacrificed during the Qurbani (animal sacrifice festival) day, in September 2016, he added.

The BGP check posts -- Inn Din, Shittapurika, Myient Hlut and Udaung are taking tolls from the cattle which the traders bring on the way from Rathedaung to their destination, Alay Than Kyaw. So, traders have to pay Kyat 8,000 per head as a tolls on the way, said a trader on condition of anonymity.

The traders also said that if they show the documents - had already taken permission from concerned authorities, but BGP personnel destroyed it after taking.

The cows are very expensive this year. A medium cow is being sold at Kyat 600,000 to 700,000, which was sold at Kyat 500,000 last year. For the trader, the profit is very limited, Rukon, another cattle trader said.
